What Did We Learn About Sex—and Who Taught Us?

Our understanding of sexuality develops through spoken messages, silences and everyday examples. Which of those lessons have we examined?

Think back to your earliest understanding of sex and relationships.

Who explained them to you?

Perhaps someone offered a calm, thoughtful explanation. Perhaps you gathered fragments from friends, films, jokes or overheard conversations. Perhaps the strongest lesson was that respectable people did not ask such questions.

Even silence can teach us something—although the lesson we draw from it may not be the one intended.

The messages we inherit

We may encounter ideas such as:

“Men are always interested in sex.”

“Women should not express desire.”

“Marriage makes discussion unnecessary.”

“Older people should have moved beyond these feelings.”

These statements can sound familiar enough to escape examination. Yet each assumes that people within a particular group experience sexuality in the same way.

Individual lives are more varied.

Familiar does not necessarily mean accurate

An idea may feel true because we heard it repeatedly. It may have come from someone we respect. It may also have helped us navigate a particular stage of life.

We can acknowledge that history while still asking whether the idea is fair, accurate or useful today.

Examining a belief does not require condemning our families or rejecting our culture. It requires taking responsibility for what we continue to believe and pass on.

Three questions to begin with

When a strong belief about sexuality arises, ask:

  • Where did I learn this?

  • Does it allow for people whose experiences differ from mine?

  • Does it help me treat myself and others with dignity?

We may not reach an immediate answer. Recognising the source of an assumption is itself a beginning.

Understanding sexuality involves learning new things. It also involves revisiting lessons we absorbed before we knew how to question them.

Understanding Sexuality - Living with Dignity

Every honest question is a beginning.

Understanding ourselves begins with the willingness to ask, reflect and learn. Explore sexuality, relationships and the beliefs that shape our lives—at your own pace.
