Why SHAURYA?
A space to ask honest questions about sexuality, examine inherited beliefs, and understand ourselves and others with dignity.

Sexuality is part of being human. Yet it is a subject many of us learn to avoid discussing.
We may grow up hearing what is forbidden without understanding why. We may experience attraction without knowing how to express it respectfully. We may carry questions about intimacy, pleasure, restraint or companionship for years because asking them feels embarrassing.
These are the questions SHAURYA wishes to make room for.
An enquiry that began with sexual harassment
SHAURYA began in 2014 with a concern about sexual harassment. Its name was formed from the words Sexual Harassment Awareness Understanding Redressal Youth Advisory.
Behind that concern lay a deeper question:
If sexuality can be associated with pleasure, joy and closeness, why does it also become a setting for harassment, fear and humiliation?
This question requires careful thought. What one person desires may be unwanted by another. Attraction does not establish mutual interest. Pleasure cannot be assumed to be shared.
Understanding sexuality therefore involves understanding consent, boundaries, power and responsibility.
It also invites us to examine the messages we inherit: what we learn about men and women, desire and shame, relationships and control.
What we hope to explore
SHAURYA will gradually explore sexuality across the stages of life, including the beliefs that shape us, the questions we hesitate to ask, and the choices through which we relate to others.
There will be room for desire and restraint, intimacy and solitude, companionship and differences in sexual interest. No single way of experiencing sexuality describes everyone.
The purpose is to encourage informed reflection and respectful conduct. Personal experiences, philosophical ideas and research will each have a place, with their differences made clear.
Learning without humiliation
We do not need to know every answer before beginning an honest conversation. We do need a willingness to listen, question our assumptions and recognise another person’s dignity.
SHAURYA is being developed in that spirit—slowly, thoughtfully and with an open mind.
Understanding sexuality. Living with dignity.
